Vapes are sold in two main formats: 510-thread cartridges that attach to a separate battery, and all-in-one disposable devices. Both contain cannabis extract; the difference is mainly in the hardware.
510-thread cartridges
“510” refers to a standard screw thread used by most cartridges and batteries, so a cartridge from one brand will usually fit a 510 battery from another. You buy the battery once and replace only the cartridge.
- Needs: a compatible 510 battery, sold separately in our accessories.
- Good to know: many batteries have adjustable voltage; follow the cartridge maker’s guidance.
- Waste: only the empty cartridge is replaced each time.
Disposable vapes
A disposable combines the battery and the extract in one sealed device. There is nothing to attach or set up, and some models include a charging port so the battery lasts as long as the extract.
- Needs: nothing extra.
- Good to know: once the extract runs out, the whole device is finished.
- Waste: the device contains a lithium battery, so it should not go in household garbage.
Which format is right for you?
If you already own a 510 battery, or expect to buy vapes regularly, cartridges usually mean less waste over time. If you want something simple with no separate parts, a disposable is the more straightforward option. In both cases, compare the THC and CBD content on the label; our THC vs. CBD guide explains the numbers.
Storage and safe disposal
Store vapes upright, away from heat and direct sunlight, and out of reach of children and pets. Never put vape batteries or disposables in household garbage or recycling bins, because lithium batteries can cause fires. Take them to a battery drop-off or your municipality’s household hazardous waste depot.
Buy legal products only
