THC and CBD are the two most talked-about compounds in cannabis, and they’re printed on every product label you’ll see in our store or on our shop. Here’s a plain-language breakdown of what they are and how they differ.
What Is THC?
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the cannabinoid best known for producing the intoxicating effects associated with cannabis. THC content is measured as a percentage or in milligrams and varies widely between products — from low-THC options to higher-potency flower and concentrates.
What Is CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, meaning it does not produce the “high” associated with THC. It’s found in varying amounts across cannabis products, and many people choose CBD-forward or balanced THC:CBD products specifically because they don’t want a strong intoxicating effect.
Reading a Product Label
Every legal cannabis product sold in Ontario displays its THC and CBD content, usually as a range (e.g., 15–20% THC) because natural variation exists between plants. Look for:
- THC % or mg per unit
- CBD % or mg per unit
- The excise stamp confirming it’s a legal, regulated product
Balanced vs. THC-Dominant vs. CBD-Dominant
Products are generally grouped into three categories:
- THC-dominant — higher THC, minimal CBD
- Balanced (1:1) — roughly equal THC and CBD
- CBD-dominant — higher CBD, low or no THC
Which one is right for you depends entirely on personal preference and experience level. If you’re new to cannabis, starting with lower-THC or balanced products and going slow is a common approach.
