Cannabis can affect coordination, reaction time and judgement. Driving while impaired by cannabis is a criminal offence in Canada, and Ontario adds its own rules on top. Here is what every adult should know.
Impaired driving is illegal for everyone
It is illegal to drive a car, truck, boat, snowmobile or other vehicle while impaired by cannabis. Police can use roadside oral fluid screening and drug recognition evaluations, and penalties can include licence suspension, fines, vehicle impoundment, a criminal record and jail time.
Zero tolerance for some drivers
In Ontario, certain drivers must have no cannabis in their system at all, including:
- Drivers aged 21 and under
- Novice drivers with a G1, G2, M1 or M2 licence
- Drivers of commercial vehicles
No consuming in vehicles
You cannot consume cannabis in any vehicle or boat that is being driven or will be driven, whether you are the driver or a passenger.
Transporting cannabis legally
When cannabis is in a vehicle, it must be in its original packaging and unopened, or packed in baggage that is fastened closed and not readily available to anyone in the vehicle. The trunk is the simplest option.
There is no safe shortcut
The effects of cannabis can last for hours, and the timing varies by person, product and format; edibles and beverages in particular can take longer to start and last longer. If you have consumed cannabis, do not drive. Plan ahead with a sober driver, a taxi or rideshare, or public transit.
