Concentrates are products made by separating the resin-rich parts of the cannabis plant from the plant material. They are much more potent than dried flower, so understanding the different types helps you compare what is on the menu.
Kief
Kief is the loose, powdery collection of trichomes, the tiny resin glands on the flower. It is collected by sifting, and many three-chamber grinders gather a small amount over time.
Hash
Hash is kief or resin that has been pressed or processed into a solid. Traditional styles include pressed hash and ice-water hash, made by separating trichomes with ice water and filtering.
Rosin
Rosin is made using only heat and pressure, with no solvents. “Live rosin” is made from fresh-frozen plants rather than dried flower.
Solvent-based extracts
Products such as shatter, wax, budder and live resin are produced by licensed processors using solvents that are then purged. The names mostly describe texture: shatter is glassy, wax is soft and opaque, and budder is creamy. “Live resin” means the extract was made from fresh-frozen plants.
Distillate
Distillate is a highly refined extract that isolates specific cannabinoids. It is often used in vape cartridges, edibles and infused pre-rolls.
Potency and the possession limit
Because concentrates are so potent, they count heavily toward Ontario’s 30 g public possession limit: 0.25 g of concentrate equals 1 g of dried cannabis, so the limit is 7.5 g of concentrates. The label shows THC and CBD content, usually as a percentage or in milligrams per gram. Read our label guide and the full Ontario rules.
Storing concentrates
Keep concentrates in their original containers, somewhere cool and dark, and out of reach of children and pets. Heat can change their texture. See our storage tips.
