Cannabis edibles, such as gummies, chocolates and baked goods, are one of the most asked-about categories in our store. They work differently from smoking or vaping, so it is worth understanding a few basics before you buy.
The 10 mg THC limit
In Canada, a package of edible cannabis can contain no more than 10 mg of THC in total. That limit applies to the whole package, whether it holds one chocolate bar or ten gummies, so always check how much THC is in each piece. The label lists THC and CBD in milligrams per package and, for multi-piece products, per unit.
Why timing matters with edibles
When cannabis is eaten, it is processed through the digestive system. Effects can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to begin and can last many hours. A common mistake is taking more because nothing seems to be happening yet. If you are new to edibles:
- Start with a low amount of THC.
- Wait at least 2 hours before deciding whether to take more.
- Avoid mixing cannabis with alcohol or other substances.
- Do not drive or operate machinery after consuming.
Reading an edible label
Every legal edible shows total THC and total CBD, the standardized cannabis symbol, a health warning, the packaging date and a lot number, plus the excise stamp. Our guide on reading a cannabis label walks through each part. If you want to compare THC-dominant, balanced and CBD-dominant options, see THC vs. CBD.
Storing edibles safely
Edibles can look like ordinary snacks, which makes safe storage especially important. Keep them in their original child-resistant packaging, out of sight and reach of children and pets, ideally in a locked container. If a child or pet eats cannabis, call the Ontario Poison Centre at 1-800-268-9017, or 911 in an emergency. Some edibles need refrigeration, so follow the package instructions. More tips are in our storage guide.
Edibles and the possession limit
For Ontario’s 30 g public possession limit, 15 g of edible product counts as 1 g of dried cannabis. See Ontario cannabis rules for the full picture.
