Cannabis Beverages: What to Know Before You Buy

Cannabis beverages, including infused sodas, sparkling waters, teas and mixers, are regulated as edible cannabis in Canada. That means the same core rules apply, along with a few extra points specific to drinks.

THC limits per container

Each container of a cannabis beverage can hold no more than 10 mg of THC. Many drinks contain far less, and some are CBD-forward or balanced. The label shows total THC and total CBD for the container, so check it before you open one, especially if you plan to share.

Timing: similar to edibles

Because beverages are swallowed, effects can take time to start and can last several hours, although timing varies from person to person and product to product. Sip slowly, wait before having more, and do not combine cannabis beverages with alcohol. Never drive after consuming. Our edibles guide covers timing in more detail.

How drinks count toward the 30 g limit

For Ontario’s public possession limit, 70 g of a non-solid cannabis product (roughly 70 mL of beverage) counts as 1 g of dried cannabis. The 30 g limit therefore works out to about 2.1 litres of cannabis beverages, just under six standard 355 mL cans. The same limit applies to a single purchase. See Ontario cannabis rules.

Reading the label

Look for the THC and CBD amounts, the standardized cannabis symbol, the health warning, the packaging date and the excise stamp. Some beverages list a best-before date; follow it, since flavour and consistency can change over time. Our label guide explains each element.

Storing beverages

Cannabis drinks can be mistaken for regular soft drinks. Store them separately, clearly out of reach of children and pets, and keep them in their original packaging. Follow any refrigeration instructions on the can or bottle.
